Roses were blooming in abundance for the 2003 garden competition. Beautiful perfumes filled the air and the glorious colours were a sight to behold. The theme for this year's competition was 'plant a rainbow in your garden'.
First Prize winners, Ian and Gloria Lawrence of 40 Thomas Mitchell Crescent, had created a vision of rainbow splendour, bursting with roses and annuals all tended with love. Ian Lawrence commented that he had been joking to everyone that he would win first prize this year, but was quite astounded when first prize actually came knocking at the door.
The gentle rivalry between the neighbouring gardeners of Thomas Mitchell Crescent is evident to every passerby.
Second Prize winners, Mr and Mrs George and Imelda Fitzgerald are only a stroll across Thomas Mitchell Crescent to number 27. The Fitzgerald garden is refreshingly cool and calming. Their weeping cherry blossom is a picture of elegance.
There were three highly commended prizes, all with varying styles of garden but all examples of enthusiasm, dedication and great garden planning.
Mr and Mrs George and Helen Wearn have the most magnificent profusion of pale pink roses (4 Banks Place).
Glen Hancock also has beautiful roses, topiary lavender and much more. This is an outstanding effort considering Mrs Glen Hancock has only been in Sunshine Bay for such a short time (7 Caley Place).
Mr Keith Copeland has made a champion effort on a difficult corner block planting many elegant feature trees and shrubs as well as being a generous neighbour to other gardeners (15 Blaxland Crescent).
The developers of Sunshine Bay would like to apologise for the late delivery of competition flyers due to an oversight. We understand that the notice gave too little time for Sunshine Bay to ready itself. As a result, for this year we have added a third highly commended and have also awarded 10 encouragement prizes instead of 3.
Encouragement awards have been given to the following great efforts:
2 Grey Place, Helen Martin
17 Thomas Mitchell Cres, SA Bushell
22 Thomas Mitchell Cres, Ronald and June McClenanhan
33 Wills Crescent, Maureen and John Love
32 Sunshine Bay Road, Bryan and Joan Dempsey
3 Blaxland Crescent, Ray and Judy Terry
13 Blaxland Crescent, Norman and Margaret Sharp
6 Wentworth Place, Kata and Mato Katic
11 Wentworth Place, Ronald and Gaye Biggs
13 Poole Place, Kevin and Judy Innes
